Malmo in Cornwall

Further Afield Local Guides

Fowey

July 28, 2021

The  location of Malmo in Cornwall means that you are well placed to explore so many of its best bits. 45mins to an hour drive from the house opens too many options to mention in one post so we will start by suggesting a day trip along the coast to Fowey.

Carlyon Bay and Charlestown

Poldark fans make recognise Charlestown harbour as it has frequently featured in the series. In its 21st Century guise it is now a trendy foodie spot with The Long Store just one of several great restaurants cluster the harbour which is lit up by festoon lights at night. Head out of town to Carlyon Bay for a gorgeous large sandy beach perfect for a spot of paddleboarding.

If that makes you hungry newly opened this season, Manor Made Cornwall offers teas, coffees and fresh home baking from a blue and white striped beach hut

Fowey

Fowey has long been a Cornish favorite with its estuary bobbing with sailboats and winding streets. There has been a clutch of new restaurant openings there recently bringing a vibrant contemporary food scene.

Book ahead at Fitzroys or walk-in on the day at North Street Kitchen. We always love a drink on the terrace of the Old Quay Hotel and a mooch in Any Old Lights. On Sundays there is an independent market in Fowey Hall.

Lostwithiel

Situated in a beautiful wooded valley at the tidal reach of the River Fowey, Lostwithiel is full of great independent shops and a great place to stop on the way to Fowey. Two of our favourites are the Lostwithiel Antiques Centre and Alice In Scandiland – the latter offering a beautifully curated mix of Scandi brands and work from local artisans.  If shopping makes you hungry head up the hill to the Duchy of Cornwall nurseries for a cream tea in a tipi tent in the middle of beautiful plants and wildlife.
